Staging Performance Optimization & Multi-Property Infrastructure Reconciliation: A Battery-Interrupted Sprint

Last session, we were deep in the weeds across five concurrent projects when the laptop battery died mid-sprint. Here's the technical breakdown of what we accomplished and what's pending.

1. Queen of San Diego Staging: Modal Script Removal & Image Lazy-Loading

The Problem: Staging environment (`staging.queenofsandiego.com`) was showing performance degradation on pages with heavy modal interactions and unoptimized image loading. Initial profiling indicated render-blocking JavaScript and eager image loads on hero sections.

What We Did:

  • Removed modal initialization script from static pages: Deleted modal script includes from `/staging-assets/templates/404.html` and `/staging-assets/templates/thank-you.html`. These pages don't have interactive modal triggers, so the 2.3 KB minified modal library was pure overhead.
  • Implemented lazy-loading on concert-nights.html: Applied `loading="lazy"` attribute to 12 of 14 image tags on `/staging-assets/templates/concert-nights.html`. The hero image and featured concert card remained with `loading="eager"` to preserve critical rendering path performance. Images were sourced from the CloudFront distribution (`d2j8q3n4p9m2r5.cloudfront.net`) with appropriate cache headers.

Technical Details:

<img
  src="https://d2j8q3n4p9m2r5.cloudfront.net/images/concert-2024-hero.webp"
  loading="eager"
  decoding="async"
  width="1920"
  height="600"
  alt="Featured concert event"
/>

For secondary images, we switched to lazy-loading with explicit dimensions to prevent cumulative layout shift (CLS):

<img
  src="https://d2j8q3n4p9m2r5.cloudfront.net/images/event-thumbnail.webp"
  loading="lazy"
  decoding="async"
  width="400"
  height="300"
  alt="Concert event thumbnail"
/>

Why This Approach: Native browser `loading="lazy"` is simpler than JavaScript intersection observers for this use case and has excellent browser support. By keeping only the hero image eager and deferring the rest, we maintain visual stability while cutting initial page load work. CloudFront caching with aggressive TTLs (86400s for versioned assets) means repeat visitors see zero latency.

Next Steps: The staging URLs needed testing to confirm Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) improvement. Target was sub-2.5s LCP.

2. Sail JADA: GetMyBoat Inquiry Automation & Rent Credit Reconciliation

The Context: Two overlapping tasks on the main Sail JADA project:

Task A – GetMyBoat Automation Handoff: We drafted a prompt for a Tier 2 engineer to handle automated GetMyBoat inquiry processing, including a template response draft to send to a contact named Carole. The automation would need to integrate with the existing booking pipeline and log inquiries to a CRM or database table.

Task B – Lowe's Invoice Credit Extraction: Three Lowe's invoices needed manual extraction and reconciliation:

  • Invoice #81813: $50.28
  • Invoice #79268: $207.86
  • Invoice #72233: $79.96
  • Total new credits: $338.10

These credits were being applied to adjust the monthly rent calculation for the property management backend. The credits represent maintenance/upgrade expenses that reduce net rent owed.

Infrastructure Note: Both workflows tie into the `sailjada-payments` microservice (running on ECS cluster `arn:aws:ecs:us-west-2:ACCOUNT:cluster/sailjada-prod`) and the `rent-ledger` DynamoDB table (partition key: `property_id`, sort key: `transaction_date`).

3. Sail JADA: SEO & 404 Resolution

The Issue: Users clicking the link-in-bio URL on social media were hitting a 404 on the `charter-options` path. Root cause: CloudFront cache rule mismatch with the actual S3 key structure.

What We Fixed:

  • Google Search Console Sitemap Submission: Submitted the GSC sitemap containing 28 URLs with zero indexing errors. The sitemap is auto-generated and published to `s3://sailjada-public/sitemap.xml` on every deploy.
  • Tier 2 Handoff Prompt: Documented the issue and solution approach in `/tmp/sailjada-tier2-handoff-prompt.md` and emailed it for async handoff. The prompt included Route53 DNS checks, CloudFront origin configuration review, and S3 redirect rules.
  • Per-URL Indexing Requests: GSC's "Request Indexing" button was available but left as manual-only (UI action, not API-driven) to avoid request throttling on low-priority pages.

Architecture Note: The `charter-options` page is served from S3 bucket `sailjada-public` through CloudFront distribution ID `E3J5K8M2N9P4Q7` with an origin access identity (OAI) for security. S3 cache invalidation was necessary after fixing the key mapping.

4. 3028 51st Street Property: Monthly Rent Reconciliation

Workflow: Receipt logging and ledger reconciliation for the single-property rental at `3028fiftyfirststreet.92105.dangerouscentaur.com`:

  • Credits Logged: $50.28 and $102.66 receipts subtracted from the $3,200 base monthly rent.
  • Additions: Solar generation credit and internet service cost added back to the ledger.
  • Deferred Items: Electric, gas, and water utility charges flagged for later processing (awaiting bills).

A comprehensive handoff document was written to `/Documents/repos/3028-51st-property/HANDOFF.md` with the full reconciliation state and next steps for the property manager.

5. Adam Cherry Comics: DNS & Stripe Settlement Coordination

The Challenge: Coordinating a domain migration to consolidate under the dangerouscentaur.com infrastructure while managing Stripe settlement tracking.

Phase 1 Status (when interrupted):

  • Namecheap DNS Change: Initiated CNAME alias from `adamcherrycomics.com` → `adamcherrycomics.dangerouscentaur.com`. Phone coordination with the account holder was in progress to verify two required CNAME records for ACM certificate validation.
  • ACM Certificate: Certificate request pending the two CNAME additions to Namecheap (status: "Pending validation").
  • Stripe Settlement: Rate-tagging for settlement records was in progress but incomplete when the session died.

Infrastructure Details: Once the CNAME records are confirmed, the Route53 zone for `dangerouscentaur.
